Dublin City Public Libraries presents a colourful and varied programme to celebrate Heritage Week this year, with a special emphasis on our sporting heritage.

Celebrating Our Sporting Heritage Seminar

In Conversation with Dublin’s Sporting Heroes.
As part of Dublin European Capital of Sport 2010 Dublin City Libraries in conjunction with Sports and Recreation Section, Dublin City Council have organised a seminar to celebrate our sporting heritage and the numerous sporting heroes associated with the city.
Contributors will include:
- JOHN GILES
Well known as a highly respected soccer pundit, John Giles is one of the greats of Irish sport. He won numerous honours with the hugely successful Leeds United team of the early 1970s, represented the Irish national team with distinction from 1959 - 1979 and managed the Irish team from 1973 - 1980.
- BARNEY ROCK
Former Dublin Gaelic footballer, Barney Rock, played his club football for Ballymun Kickhams. During an 11 year career with Dublin he won 4 Leinster senior football medals, 1 national football league title and an All Ireland senior football championship medal. He was named on the GAA All Star team for three years running. Barney was a member of the inaugural Irish International Rules team which travelled to Australia in 1984.
- MICHAEL CARRUTH
When Michael Carruth returned from the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona with Ireland’s first ever gold medal for boxing, he received a hero’s welcome. He turned professional in 1994 and retired from the sport in 2000. Michael will go down as one of the great Irish Olympians.
- ANNETTE KEALY
A member of Raheny Shamrocks Athletic Club, Annette Kealy achieved the biggest win of her illustrious career in June 2008 when she won the Flora Women’s 10km mini marathon through the streets of her native Dublin. Annette competed for Ireland in the World Cross Country championships, and anchored the club’s teams to victory in the National Road Relay championships.
Introduced by Karl Mitchell, Sports and Active Living Manager, Sports and Recreation Section, Dublin City Council and chaired by Paul Harris, sports historian.

Bohemian Football Club By Robert Dunne

Celebrating 120 years, Robert Dunne, President of Bohemian F.C. presents an illustrated talk on the long and distinguished history of the club, from beginnings at a small gathering on 6th September 1890 to its current position as League of Ireland Champions for 2008 and 2009.
Gold, Silver and Green: The Irish Olympic Journey 1896 – 1924 By Dr. Kevin McCarthy

An illustrated talk tracing the Irish involvement in the Olympics, the sporting achievements of the great Irish and Irish American athletes. Also it explores the political battles fought within Irish sport and against international barriers to Irish recognition at the Olympics. Dr. Kevin McCarthy is a senior inspector of History with the Department of Education and Skills and life-long sports fan.
The History of the Horse Show By Michael Slavin

Born in 1931, Michael has been a keen observer of horses since the time they were worked on his family’s farm in Cavan in the thirties and forties. When
he moved to Dublin after the war the Horse Shows at the RDS became an annual pilgrimage. In the late sixties he began a career as equestrian journalist
and commentator. He has written for the Irish Field, Irish Farmers Journal, Horse and Hound plus other equine publications in six countries. He acted
as RTE Radio’s Show Jumping and Eventing commentator for 20 years. His previous books include Irish Show Jumping Legends 1868 – 1998; The Ancient Books of Ireland and The Book of Tara. He now runs an antiquarian book shop at the Hill of Tara, where he also makes his home.
The Army Equitation School Exhibition is on display in the RDS Library from 4th – 8th August and from 10th August to 1st October in the RDS Library. You are

Paul Harris, sports historian, talks about the history of Home Farm Football Club and its many players that have gone on to play international soccer.
Rare Oul’ Sporting Times
Two films, provided courtesy of the Irish Film Archive of the Irish Film Institute, looking at our sporting heritage.
Ireland Isle of Sport Features the various sporting activities played by Irish people including hurling, Gaelic football, rugby, hunting, horse-racing, dog-running, cycling, running,
a wheel-barrow race, golf, fishing, and yachting. President de Valera is seen at the Dublin Horse Show. 1961, 28mins. Colour.
Three Kisses: In this delightful short drama, a promising young hurler from the village of Ballykilly, County Cork, is invited to play against County Clare in the City of Cork hurling championship. He does so, and, in the process, finds romance. The film, featuring an appearance from Jim “Tough” Barry, illustrious Cork manager, was produced by Paramount Pictures for distribution in the US where it was well received and secured an Oscar nomination in 1956. 1955, 10 mins. Black & white.

Ringsend’s Football Heritage and Heroes

Paul Harris, sports historian, will provide an informative and humorous talk about the great achievements of Ringsend’s soccer heroes. Covering the early history of Shamrock Rovers and Shelbourne Football Clubs and a selection of the great characters and players who graced both teams including Bob Fullam, Jimmy Dunne, David “Babby” Byrne and Val Harris.
St. Patrick’s Athletic - Its Place in Inchicore History

This talk will trace the history of the club from its humble beginnings in 1929, when local men played in the Phoenix Park. Celebrating their meteoric rise in winning the League of Ireland championship in 1951 and their first year to play in the league. Finally, we look at their international success playing in the European League, celebrating their 80th anniversary last year and where the club is today.

A day long seminar starting at 10am. Dublin City Archives has established the Dublin City Sports Archive, which aims to collect and preserve archive material from clubs, sporting organisations and individuals which relate to Sport and Dublin City.
We will celebrate Dublin’s rich sporting heritage with talks on the history of Lansdowne Road Stadium and Maids of the Mountain Hockey Club, among other sporting topics. A snooker cue from The Crucible, signed by 21 leading players including Ken Doherty, Stephen Hendry and Ronnie O’Sullivan, will also be on display.

- 'Ireland’s First Deaf School: the Claremont Institution.' Rachel Pollard 2.00pm – 2.45pm
Rachel Pollard will discuss the philanthropic initiative by Dr Charles Orpen, MD, (granduncle of Sir William Orpen, RHA) and the school itself which was located in Smithfield, Glasnevin, and then Monkstown, Dublin, taking in over 2,500 deaf children from 1816 until its closure in 1978.
- 'The Widows’ Mite: the Widows of 1916.' Dr Ann Matthews 2.45pm – 3.30pm
Dr Matthews will discuss the fortunes and lives of the widows and dependants of the executed leaders of Easter Week 1916. Launch of Dr Ann Matthews’ new book, Renegades, published by Mercier Press.
Both lectures will be supported by a sign language interpreter.
A Century of ICA – Irish Countrywomen’s Association

A talk by Marie O’Toole, ICA National Press Officer and Dublin Federation President. An organisation that changed the lives of the women of Ireland. Founded in 1910 as the Society of United Irishwomen, this talk gives an account of the Association and the intrepid, enterprising women who founded it, celebrating their achievements and success. The Society was formed at a time when life for women in Ireland was one of hardship and drudgery, and the Society offered friendship, hope, support and leadership.

Medieval Dublin DVD - From the Vikings to the Tudors (2nd edition)
Here you will discover the secrets of the Viking and medieval city of Dublin. Archives Awareness Month, September
Archives Awareness Month is an initiative of the Archives and Records
Association, Ireland (formerly called The Society of Archivists) and is promoted in partnership with the Heritage Council. Events arranged by Dublin City Archives will relate to Sports History, Theatre History and Preservation Management. Events will include:
- A full-day seminar called Sport and the City on Saturday 11th September, with launch of the Dublin City Sports Archive.
- An exhibition to mark the transfer of the Christopher Casson Papers to Dublin City Library & Archive will open on Monday 4 October with a special evening of musical memoirs in song, poetry, and harp performed by Christopher’s daughter Glynis Casson and harpist Cormac De Barra.
- The exhibition Anna Manahan Remembered will be on display in Waterford, (Waterford City Central Library, Lady Lane, Waterford).
- An exhibition The Art of Conservation: The Dublin City Charters will be on display in the Reading Room at Dublin City Library & Archive.
